New essay for Aphrodite’s Child ‘666’ 50th anniversary Deluxe Box Set Edition (Universal Music UMR 060243594862).
‘666’ by the Greek rock band Aphrodite’s Child is one of the most original progressive rock albums of all time. Composed by the late maestro and electronic music pioneer Vangelis, it was originally released in 1972 on the legendary Vertigo label.
This essay is an edited part of the 540-page Vangelis biography and musigraphy authored by Marc-Antoine Bombail to be published in the future.

En cet été 1971, devant la caméra du grand réalisateur et humaniste Frédéric Rossif, un tout jeune Vangelis Papathanassiou improvise en direct à l’écran avec sa panoplie d’instruments électroniques et de percussion, pendant que Georges Mathieu exécute deux immenses toiles, L’Election de Charles Quint et La Nécessité de l’Espérance. Pour cette occasion, le grand dramaturge François Billetdoux écrit spécialement un magnifique texte.
Un chef-d’oeuvre méconnu qui ressucite en DVD après plus de 35 ans d’oubli. Merci à messieurs Georges Mathieu, Frédéric Rossif, Vangelis et François Billetdoux, ainsi qu’à Yves Rescalat, le producteur de cette réédition très soignée, qui nous permettent d’être à nouveau éblouis par ce legs inestimable, cette fureur suprême de la création, lorsqu’elle est marquée du sceau des plus grands artistes.

Summer 1971. In front of Frederic Rossif’s cameras, a young Vangelis Papathanassiou improvises live on screen using his self-made set-up of electronic instruments and percussions while George Mathieu is painting two giant canvases: The Election of Charles Quint and The Necessity of Hope. The great French dramaturge François Billetdoux writes a beautiful text specially for this opportunity.
Unheard of for more than 35 years, this masterpiece finally makes an extraordinary rebirth on DVD. Thanks to the producer Yves Rescalat’s painstaking work, we’re able to be enlighten again by the Fury of creation, an everlasting legacy made by those remarkable artists whose names are Georges Mathieu, Frederic Rossif, Vangelis and François Billetdoux.
